Top of our Stairs
There is a fluffy grey cocoon
At the top of our stairs
Where your blanket now
Resides undisturbed
You used to sleep there
Snug and warm in your bed
When you weren’t sneaking
Into mine at 2am to play instead
Now its empty because you’ve gone
To live this side of rainbow bridge
So don’t need it any more
I hope your wings are working well
So you can spend time running
Chasing birds and mice symbolically
Now of course in those green meadows
At the foot of hills, have lots of friends
To keep you company with the sun
Warming your backs, happy and content
You spent your time enjoying
That pastime when with us
You’d fetch one or two as gifts
I don’t miss that part at all but
We understood each other
I used to say you were
An English-speaking cat
But Adam said not, our little joke

Makes me smile today recalling
Your face looking up at us as we talked
About you, to you, our favourite hello
My favourite relaxing time hearing
Your purring on my lap in the evenings
All the times we had together
I miss you dearly, I have no regrets
We had your essence for eighteen
Wonderful, glorious years after all
The tears escaping down my cheek
Is because, you’re not here with us
Your bed however will forever stay
At the top of our stairs, because
I’ve caught your spirit once or twice
Well more than I can remember
Trotting sedately up our stairs
Over the past two years
Visiting your old homestead
You’ve gone from our sights but
You left your purring presence deeply
Firmly in our hearts and minds
Until we meet again along side
That colorful bridge and our eyes
Meet once again my heart will sing
What a joyous reunion this will be.
And we’ll be forever home together
